Cardiomyopathy and Heart Failure


  1. Define cardiomyopathy.
  2. Explain the pathological differences between dilated, hypertrophic and restrictive cardiomyopathy and relate to pathophysiology.
  3. Differentiate between types of cardiomyopathy that can result in clinical heart failure.
  4. Differentiate the causes and therapeutic interventions for restrictive, hypertrophic and dilated cardiomyopathy.
  5. Analyze the etiologies and treatment options for cardiomyopathy patients at risk for sudden death.
  6. Interpret the effects of maneuvers on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. 
  7. Compare and contrast various etiologies of cardiogenic shock.

Heart Failure and Treatment

  1. Cite examples of common causes of heart failure.
  2. Describe the various causes and classifications of Heart Failure.
  3. Describe the NYHA classification and the AHA/ACC group staging of heart failure. 
  4. Describe the pathophysiology of heart failure including neurohormonal processes and ventricular remodeling.
  5. Deduce clinical presentations of heart failure on the basis of pathophysiology.
  6. Review the classification, stages, and progression of heart failure syndromes.
  7. Describe the potential relationship between left heart failure and right heart failure.
  8. Correlate morphology of myocardial infarction with mechanisms of cell injury.
  9. On the basis of mechanism of action, explain why medical management is helpful with the following pharmacotherapies:  beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, aldosterone antagonists, diuretics, and inotropes

Congestive Heart Failure

  1. Describe etiologies and pathophysiology of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF).
  2. Diagram and critique pressure-volume changes in the right and left ventricles during the cardiac cycle for a normal individual and a patient with CHF.
  3. Describe the relationship between pulmonary hypertension and CHF.
  4. Describe the physical exam findings of CHF. 
  5. Select the appropriate diagnostic tests for a patient with CHF. 
  6. Choose the standard of care medications for the patient with CHF.
  7. Describe the treatment procedures: PCI, CABG, efibrillator, and Pacemaker, and related guidelines.
