Valvular Diseases: Pathology of Cardiac Valves and Blood Vessels

  1. Identify normal cardiac valvular anatomy.
  2. Explain the process of rheumatic heart disease and its effect on valvular pathology.
  3. Identify findings and complications of infective endocarditis.
  4. Describe common valvular disorders such as aortic stenosis and mitral degenerative disease.
  5. Describe vascular renal lesions and the connection with hypertension.
  6. Distinguish between major types of vascular aneurysms.
  7. Categorize the different types of vasculitis.

Aortic and Mitral Valve Stenoses

  1. Identify the changes in the myocardium and cardiac chambers that predispose to arrhythmias.
  2. Describe the measurements used to determine the severity of valve stenosis. 
  3. Describe the natural history and pathology of bicuspid aortic valve, aortic stenosis and ascending aortic dilation. 
  4. Explain the relationship between a congenital bicuspid aortic valve and development of aortic stenosis?  
  5. Describe the indications for aortic valve replacement for aortic stenosis.
  6. Describe the pathology and pathophysiology of hemoptysis.
  7. Describe the pathophysiology of mitral valve stenosis.
  8. Describe the presentation, clinical manifestations, and pathology of Rheumatic fever.
  9. Compare rheumatic versus calcific valve stenosis.
  10. Describe the pathology and hemodynamics of mitral stenosis.
  11. Describe the pharmacology and rationale for using (or not using) the following drugs: Norepinephrine, Phenylephrine, Dobutamine and Dopamine.
