Weekly Objectives

Obstructive Lung Disease (OLD): COPD and Persistent Asthma

Approach to Obstructive Lung Diseases

  1. Describe the mechanisms by which airflow obstruction may occur, explaining measures of airflow limitation.
  2. Identify the pathophysiologic consequences of airflow limitation.
  3. Explain the interventions that may improve airway obstruction.
  4. Compare and contrast clinical diseases associated with airflow limitation.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

  1. Describe the epidemiology, spectrum, etiology, and pathogenesis of COPD.
  2. Describe the Current Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of COPD.
  3. Compare and contrast the different clinical phenotypes of COPD.
  4. Review mechanisms of airflow limitation and apply to COPD.
  5. Explain the pharmacology of muscarinic antagonists and long-acting beta-agonists

  1. Describe the epidemiology, natural history, etiologies, stages and pathogenesis of asthma (both in childhood- and adulthood-onsets).
  2. Explain how trigger factors produce physiologic changes in airway function.
  3. Differentiate between the classifications of asthma, applying the correct classification of asthma in order to treat appropriately.
  4. Review mechanisms of airflow limitation and apply to asthma
  5. Explain the pharmacology of long-acting beta-agonists, inhaled corticosteroids, and biologic agents that affect IgE, IL-5, and IL-4/IL-13.

Control of Breathing and Acid Base Regulation

  1. Analyze arterial blood gas results for acid-base status by condition, cause, and compensation.
  2. Describe central and peripheral chemoreceptors, and their influence on minute ventilation.
  3. List the cranial nerves by which peripheral chemoreceptors signal CNS breathing centers.
  4. Describe the ventilatory responses to hypoxia and hypercarbia, and their interactions.
  5. Describe the ventilatory response to altitude.
